What's in a Name

Caleb Quaye discovered what’s in a name. David Letterman called Eric Clapton, famed rock musician, as being the greatest guitarist who ever lived. Eric Clapton replied, “I’m not the greatest. Caleb Quaye is the best guitarist in the world.” English rocker Caleb Quaye found that success and fame were unreal and transient. In his book A Voice Louder Than Rock and Roll, Quaye reveals what it was like to produce music and play guitar for great names like Elton John, The Who, the Beatles, and many others. Quaye became a world famous guitarist. But one day he found himself in front of a mirror after a life of drugs, girls, fame, and fortune.

He said, “There’s got to be more to life than this!” One day Quaye discovered the name above all names – the Rock of Ages. Caleb Quaye put his faith and life into the hands of Jesus and was totally changed. He received a name.

Most people don’t like their name. In his book Caleb Quaye tells of many famous stars who changed theirs to a “stage” name. But they were still empty and lost even with a new name. Why do so many celebrities change their names? Not just for better stage presence or recognition, most change their names because they don’t like who they are on the inside.

In ancient biblical times most names revealed something about the person. Abram was promised a child even though he and his wife were way past child bearing age. God changed their names. Abram became Abraham – the father of many nations. God promised that through the “seed” of Abraham all nations of the earth would be blessed. Jacob’s name meant “cheat or supplanter”. He lived up to his name. One starry night Jacob had a God encounter – he wrestled with the Angel of the Lord until daybreak. The Angel of the Lord put his hip out of socket. Jacob had a life changing experience with the Lord. His name was changed to Israel – “prince with God”. (Genesis 32:24-30)

In the Bible the names of God are fascinating. It takes numerous names to reveal all of the aspects of God’s glory, character, and power because He is such an awesome God. A great diamond is cut with many sides or facets to reveal the splendor of its glory. God’s names reveal His splendor and glory. This Christmas I pray that you will behold the splendor and glory of His name.

The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of the Messiah. He revealed His name. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 KJV). In this one verse alone the prophet reveals five names that would characterize the Messiah.

First – WONDERFUL. Christ would be a supernatural wonder. He would show his Deity and character by his deeds and miracles. Have you come to know and to experience His wonderful and wonder working name? He still works wonders.

Second – COUNSELOR. The Messiah became perfect wisdom incarnate and has the words of eternal life. You can trust in His name as Counselor. He came to reveal God’s perfect plan of salvation. Listen to His counsel.

Third – MIGHTY GOD. In Christ all the fullness of Deity dwells. He is God come in the flesh. (Colossians 2:9; John 1:1, 14) He is mighty, the Lord of Lords, King of Kings. Bow down before Him. Fall down before the Most High God.

Fourth – EVERLASTING FATHER. Jesus Christ came to reveal the Father. He reaches out to His children as a compassionate father. A father who protects, saves, cares for, and supplies the needs of his children. (Psalm 103:13) Do you know his name – the Everlasting Father?

Fifth – PRINCE OF PEACE. Christ’s rule would bring peace with God through forgiveness and deliverance from the bondage of sin and death. (Romans 5:1, 5, 8) To know His name is to have the peace of God because Jesus is the Prince of Peace. For “the Son of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings” (Malachi 4:2). Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, prophesied, “Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high has visited us” (Luke 1:78). Receive His peace today.

What’s in a name? When it comes to God’s Son – everything! The angel Gabriel, announced that, “They shall call his name Jesus . . . the Son of the Highest . . . His kingdom shall have no end” (Luke 1:31-33 KJV). Read the gospels concerning His birth and list his names. Meditate on his wonderful names. Give Him praise and glory.

Why does the devil and man try so hard to erase the name of Jesus Christ from Christmas? They know that someday “every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:9-11). Like the former rock star Caleb Quaye, put your faith in the name of the Rock of Ages and you will never be the same.

“That if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 19:9-10).
