The Way
|
Two brothers running across America, as well as a young couple sitting on the steps of a subway station near the collapsed World Trade Center, all must face the question: “Where are you headed?” A famous rock singer sang, “The world is a bad place, a very bad place to live. Oh, but I don’t want to die.” Today we watch shattered children, the victims of war, groaning on the six o’clock news while we calmly eat our dinner. We hear people threaten one another and plot the bombing and massacre of innocent families. We suddenly realize that we Americans are also vulnerable along with the rest of the world. The enemy, the devil (John 10:10) is trying to rip apart our world of peace and freedom, leaving only a memory. |
So much of our modern experience echoes the scripture: “Before every man there lies a wide and pleasant road he thinks is right, but it ends in death.” (Proverbs 16:25, TLB)
Is there a way to life, joy, peace, wholeness, health, direction and purpose?
The Word of God says: “As for God, his way is perfect, the Word of the Lord is true.” (2 Samuel 22:31, TLB)
“This is the fresh, new, life-giving way which Christ has opened up for us… to let us into the holy presence of God.” (Hebrews 10:20)
Jesus told him (Thomas), “I am the Way – yes, and the Truth, and the Life. No one can get to the Father except by means of me.” (John 14:6, TLB)
How can this be? Do not the circumstances of our planet eliminate the idea of the “goodness of God”? Hasn’t science disproved these “ancient myths”? Is the Bible really relevant today?
I challenge you to read the Word of God for yourself. You may want to start with the Gospels in the New Testament, perhaps John or Mark. There are crucial truths which despite what you may have been told, have a great deal to do with the 21st century.
This world was not always like it is today. God made it beautiful. He made man in His image without hatred, lust or hang-ups. Men are the ones who rebelled against God and messed everything up.
God, as seen in the Bible, kept speaking to men. Some listened. Some obeyed. But most went on ignoring Him, searching for their own answers, going their own way. No wonder we now have so many conflicting ideologies, religions, and questions about life and right and wrong.
The Creator Himself came to earth. Men weren’t getting any closer to the way of life, so God came here in a physical body. He was called Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, the Son of man, the Messiah, “the Way, the Truth, the Life.” He made God’s way clear. He spent 33 years here. Four different gospel writers give us a perspective of His earthly mission.
This God – man Jesus – “it is His power that holds everything together.” (Colossians 1:17) works powerfully changing lives, revolutionizing people where He is welcomed.
It is the power of the Cross that transforms lives. In the wilderness wandering of the Israelites, multitudes were bitten by fiery, poisonous serpents because of their ingratitude and murmuring against God (1 Corinthians 10). God in His mercy instructed Moses to make a brazen serpent and put it on a pole. All who were bitten by serpents could look to the brazen serpent set on the pole and be healed. Jesus said, “…even so I must be lifted up upon a pole, so that anyone who believes in me will have eternal life,” (John 3:14, TLB.) Jesus was lifted up on the cross as a perfect sacrifice and to pay the penalty for our sins (Romans 6:23). He arose from the dead. All who look to Christ in faith receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
He brings a transformation in human existence! “Your cup of joy will overflow,” He told His followers (John 15:11, TLB). Jesus turns darkness into light, hate to love, death to life, hopelessness to hope, fear to faith, the crooked way to the straight way.
The eternal Word came to Earth to show us God the Father. In the Holy Bible we discover the answer to life. We can’t take the complexities and paradoxes of life and wrap them up in a neat package. But God tells us what we need to know for joyful, peaceful and purposeful living. As you read His Word let God speak to you personally. You will be confronted by the Way. The choice is yours. He won’t make life problem-free and all rosy, but you’ll experience and understand the meaning and purpose of your life.
Are you on the Way?
“But to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God. All they need to do was trust him to save them.” (John 1:12,TLB)
You can begin on the Way by praying sincerely in faith: “Dear Jesus, I believe you are “The Way, the Truth, and the Life.” I believe you died for my sins and arose from the dead. Forgive me of my sins and be the Lord of my Life.” (Romans 10:9-10) Amen.
