Telling Your Future

Charise went on a dare. At her friend’s urging she went to a “reading”. She thought it was all harmless fun. But when the fortune-teller began to reveal details about her life that she had never shared with anyone, she became alarmed. Cold chills went up and down her spine. Later, at her home, strange things began to happen. Knocking on her walls and shadowy figures seemed to be watching her when she was alone.

Mitch was stressed out and depressed since he had been laid off from his job. One night, as he was watching television, he saw a phone number for a psychic hot line. Before he knew it, he had hundreds of dollars charged to his credit card.

Many people are curious about their future. Millions of dollars are spent each year on psychics, fortunetellers, and other New Age gurus and religions. Opening themselves up to New Age deception damages many emotionally, mentally, financially, or spiritually.

Man was created with a need for the spiritual dimension. We are more than a physical body and a brain. We were born to relate to our creator God through worship and intimate fellowship. (See Revelation 3:20.) Unfortunately there is also a dark side to spirituality. We see some off that dark side portrayed in numerous movies and television programming and other media. Books concerning the dark side of evil abound and it is not all fiction. Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, when the serpent, Satan, deceived Adam and Eve, satan has duped multitudes of people to follow his counterfeits of God’s truth and holiness into the dark abyss of destruction and death. (See John 10:10.)

Satan has many tricks of his trade to hook and bind his victims. Warlocks, witches, soothsayers, psychics, fortunetellers, horoscopes, stargazers, and mediums are just a few of his tools to lead the curious and vulnerable astray. God commanded in His Holy Word, “There shall not be found among you anyone . . . that useth divination or an observer of times or an enchanter or a witch or a charmer or a consulter with familiar spirits or a wizard or a necromancer (one who practices communicating with the dead to determine the future)” (Numbers 18:10, 11).

Many Americans trust in luck to bring them good fortune. They carry lucky charms, wear lucky shirts, and perform certain rituals before important events. When good things happen it makes them feel good but is short-lived. The blessing God wants to give is longer lasting and doesn’t depend on ones’ luck, fate, or circumstances in life.

Does God have a future for His creation? Can you know what your future holds? God has revealed the future in His Holy Word. To those who align themselves to His will for their lives God says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, ”plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). God wants us to trust Him day by day to work those plans out for our life. He wants us to seek Him in prayer and to realize He is our ultimate desire and fulfillment. (See Jeremiah 29:12, 13.)

In the September 11, 2002 entry of “Our Daily Bread” is the following account, “twelve hours after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, a television new reporter stood near Ground Zero with a sheaf of papers in her hand. She had picked them up from the street, which was littered with debris from the Twin Towers. One sheet was part of a corporate financial report, another was a business proposal, and a third was a retirement plan. In light of the thousands of lives lost, those papers seemed so much less important than they were just hours before.

“Tragedy alters our perspective. When lives are on the line, we realize that people, not possessions are what matters most. And if we take steps to realign our priorities and to treat people well, the lesson will not have been wasted.” And I might add, our lives and future will be rewarding.

I saw this succinct message on a t-shirt the other day, (underneath a picture of Jesus stretched out on a wood-splintered cross with blood flowing down his nail-pierced hands and feet) “His Palms were Red to Tell Your Future.” Neither new Age religionists nor psychics can tell your future. But Jesus died on the cross for your sins to tell you that you can have a future in eternity with Him. To the penitent thief dying on the cross Jesus said, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). To His children He says, “In my Father’s house are many mansions . . . I go to prepare a place for you . . . I will come again and take you to be with me that you may be where I am . . . I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:1-6).

Yes, His palms Were Red to Tell Your Future. You can enter that wonderful future He has planned for you for eternity.

A - Admit you have sinned. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

B - Believe in Jesus. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

C - Confess and leave your sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
