The Rock

Women especially value a big rock on their finger. There’s a song that says, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” But I want to draw our attention to a rock greater than diamonds.

I’ll always remember the day that I took my granddaughter to the park to play on the swings. But instead of swinging, she sifted through the dirt and rocks until she found the treasure she was looking for. She ran over to me with her dusty outstretched hand. She said, “Here, Papa, this rock is for you just because I love you.” She then handed me a small heart-shaped rock that she had found. I still have that rock in a medicine bottle sitting on my dresser.

God has revealed His love and care for His people in many different ways. One word-picture revealed in many scripture passages is THE ROCK. When Israel became a nation again in 1948, one of the names for the new nation that they considered was “ROCK”. The ROCK was very significant to Israel. You can take a Bible concordance and find numerous scriptural references to the Rock. God gave a picture-type of His relationship to His people as the Rock.

When Moses led the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery and through the desert toward the Promised Land, they became thirsty. Where would over a million people find water? They cried out to Moses for water. God told Moses to take his staff and go to the Rock Horeb, “And you shall strike the Rock and water will come out of it that the people may drink.” When Moses struck the rock in obedience, the rock split in two and water gushed out. Israel’s thirst was satisfied. (Exodus 17:3-6) On another occasion when Moses asked to see the glory of God, God placed him in the cleft of the rock and allowed him to see His glory. (Exodus 33:18-22)

In the New Testament the Holy Spirit revealed a wonderful and powerful truth through the Apostle Paul. Concerning Israel’s deliverance and wilderness wandering, the Word of God says, “And all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ” (I Corinthians 10:3-4 NASB). Christ – the Eternal Word is the Rock, that follows His children.

Friend, the only thing that can satisfy your spiritual thirst is the rock – Christ Jesus. As Moses struck the rock and water gushed out satisfying the thirsty, so Jesus, the Rock of Ages, was struck and nailed to the cross as our sacrifice for sin. When the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with their spear, water and blood poured out and became a cleansing stream for all who will receive his work on the cross through repentance and faith. This Rock, who is more precious than diamonds, proved his love for all mankind by willingly laying down his life to be smitten for the sins of the world. (Isaiah 53:3-6) Look to the only Rock that can satisfy your thirst.

In one of the most poignant hymns of the church, “Rock of Ages”, Augusta Toplady wrote “Rock of Ages cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save me from its guilt and pow’r.”

Don’t just get a “piece of the rock”, receive the Rock as your Lord, Savior, and satisfier. He’ll be the Rock that follows you.
