No Change

Noah, our three year old grandson, sat at the long table of people, deep in thought, while waiting for the church fellowship dinner to begin. “Mom,” he said, “Dad doesn’t have any sense!” “What do you mean your dad doesn’t have any sense?” his mother replied. “He doesn’t have any bucks!” he replied. “Any bucks?” she asked. “Yes. Dad said he didn’t have any change for me to put in the offering during church today,” he stated dejectedly.

Sometimes we all have a difficult time being understood. Noah, I’ll give you a buck for that illustration. While Noah was disappointed that he didn’t have any change for the church offering, I want to point out a different type of change.

Things in life today are in flux. Change is a fact of life. Some change is good. Without change we would grow stale or become bogged down in a rut. Someone said that a rut is a grave with both ends knocked out. There are many times when we must change or be left behind or die. But change in our society and culture is happening at such a dizzying speed and frequency that it sometimes can leave one breathless, insecure, and lonely.

There is one aspect where NO CHANGE is a comfort. God tells us this about himself in a changing world. “I AM the Lord, I change not” (Malachi 3:6). What does that mean? It means that God’s character and attributes do not change. While everything and everyone else around us may suddenly change, God does not change! We can depend on Him. We can rest secure in Him. God’s love and faithfulness will never change. God’s grace, mercy, and redemption does not change. His omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence are constant. Thank God we can change (II Corinthians 5:17) but God doesn’t change.

One of the greatest comforts in the New Testament is this revelation concerning God’s Son. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Jesus came to show us what our Heavenly Father is like. What we see in Jesus we see in the Father. Jesus will always be like He was yesterday. As in eternity past (John 1) and as He ministered on earth, Jesus will continue to be the same. You see it in His Holy Word. Jesus is the same today as he will be tomorrow. He will not change His love and involvement in your life. He is neither fickle nor forgetful. There is NO CHANGE with God. Jesus is the same forever. In a 1,000 or 1,000,000 years from now Jesus will be the same as he was “yesterday, today, and forever.”

Man, methods, and money matters may change but “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Because of that we are given certain assurance in Hebrews 13. Let’s consider some of these assurances.

First – MARRIAGE WILL NOT CHANGE in God’s order. “Give honor to marriage and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge those who are immoral and those who commit adultery” (Hebrew 13:4 NLT).

Second – MONEY MARKETS MAY FAIL BUT GOD WON’T. “Stay away from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5 NLT).

Third – MORTAL MAN CANNOT HARM YOU. “That is why we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:6 NLT) When Jesus Christ is your Savior and Lord you need not fear for you have immortality and eternal life. (John 3:16)

Fourth – MODEL MEN AND WOMEN OF FAITH. “Trust the Lord as they do” (Hebrews 13:7 NLT). These three things will endure – “faith, hope, and love” (I Corinthians 13:13). “Do you have any sense?” my grandson would ask. Faith is the sixth sense.
Robert Morrison was one of the first missionaries to China in the early 1800’s. As he was sailing to China, the captain of the ship asked, rather sarcastically, “So, Mr. Morrison, you expect to make an impression on the great empire of China, do you?” Morrison replied, “No, I expect God will.”

The things of this world are in constant flux. But there is no change with God. “Jesus is the great Shepherd of the sheep by an everlasting covenant; signed with His blood. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Hebrews 13:21 NLT).

Have you trusted the One who is forever? “For as many as received Him, gave He power to become sons of God, even as many as believed in His name” (John 1:12).
