Marrying a Non-Believer

If your a Christian and considering whether you should date or marry a non-believer it is important to remember what the Bible has to say:

2nd Corinthians 6:14-15
14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

So God’s simple answer is NO and with good reason. This may sound harsh, but something as serious as marriage needs to be thoroughly considered and well thought out. We should not compromise the will of God for our earthly desires, even if we are entering into a union created by God. If he created marriage does it not mean he makes the rules for how it is to be implemented? All we need to do is look in the Old Testament to see why God says not to marry unbelievers. This is what God said to the Israelites in Deuteronomy.

Deuteronomy 7:1-4:
“When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you. 2 When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy[a] them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. 3 You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters, 4 for they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you.

So if you are asking God why? If His will is not enough of a reason, here is the meat in the above scripture “for they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods.” So again, simple, the reason not to marry an unbeliever is that he/she can influence you away from the Lord.
