Man’s Greatest Breakthrough
| What would you consider to be man’s greatest breakthrough? Perhaps you would say that it some new breakthrough in science or technology. Whatever it might be, it pales in comparison of the most earth-shattering event in the history of mankind. Even the great illusionist, David Copperfield, could not duplicate it. Man’s greatest breakthrough was the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. After dying on the cross for the sins of the world and being laid in a tomb that was sealed with a stone and Roman soldiers standing guard – Jesus Christ arose victorious over death, hell, and the grave. He broke the power of death which is sin (I Corinthians 15:56). |
The Easter story is not about history – it is His story – the living Christ. The resurrection of Christ makes Him unique from al other religious leaders. Mohammed, Buddha, and other religious leaders of history are dead, buried, and gone. But you can visit Christ’s grave and find that it’s empty. Most tombs are sacred because of what they contain, but His tomb is precious to millions because it is empty. He’s the reigning King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He’s God the Son, with all the power in heaven and on earth. God the Father has given Him a “name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:9-11).
When Jesus Christ broke through death, hell, and the grave, He brought the hope and promise of eternal life. The scriptures tell us, “For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive” (I Corinthians 15:21, 22). If you are in Christ you will also experience an earth-shattering breakthrough some day – the resurrection to life eternal. (See I Corinthians 15:50-56.) At Lazarus’ tomb, where Jesus raised him from the dead, Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25)
The resurrection of Christ proves that He is whom He says that He is – the Son of God. But how do we know that Christ is risen? The empty tomb itself is witness. If the Jewish leaders and the Romans could have produces the body of Christ they certainly would have. Thus they could have quickly squelched the spread of Christianity by thousands of His followers.
The numerous and varied eyewitness accounts of His appearances after death attest to the fact of His bodily resurrection. He fist appeared to the women who went to the tomb early that first resurrection Sunday. Then, over a period of forty days, Christ appeared too many. (See Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20.) He appeared to Peter who became one of the church’s most ardent leaders. Then He paid a surprise visit to the apostles, who were gathered in fear behind locked doors. He appeared to two downcast disciples as walked along the dust road to Emmaus. He then appeared to Thomas, who was not present at the first appearance. Jesus invited doubting Thomas to touch the scars in His hands and side. “A spirit does not have flesh and bones,” Jesus said. He then appeared to over 5,000 people gathered together in one place. Chris also appeared to the Apostle Paul, who was on his way to persecute the Christians, on the road to Damascus. Christ’s appearance made a believer out of Paul.
Jesus foretold of His own death and resurrection. Either he was a lunatic; a liar, a great deceiver or He was who He said He was – the Son of God. No one could teach the moral truths as He taught nor do the miracles that He did nor forgive people’s sins and rise from the dead unless He is truly the Son of God.
Have you had a breakthrough in your life? Have you confessed the Lord Jesus as your Savior? Please don’t delay concerning your eternal destiny. Commit your life to Christ. “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, 10). Have you made Jesus Christ your Lord and King?
You may want to pray this prayer in faith and repentance, “Heavenly father, I believe in my heart that you raised Jesus from the dead. I believe He was God become man. I believe He died for me on the cross. I believe He is crowned at the right hand of God the Father. Thank you for forgiving my sins. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior. Amen.”
