The Long Journey
|
They traveled from afar. It was a long journey in search of the King of Kings. All they knew was that the prophets and the stars pointed to a great king soon to be born. They followed a mysterious, magnificent star that seemed to be guiding them to where the new king should be born. We do not know much about these wise men, magi from the east, who followed the star over mountains, deserts, and valleys in search of the Christ child – the anointed one. They had seen His star in the east and eventually it came to rest over an obscure, dusty Bethlehem. Unknown to them at the time, it was a fulfillment of a centuries old prophecy. “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” (Micah 5:2) |
God prepares His plans and purposes with angels, miracles, messages, and stars. Our great and almighty God, creator of the universe, dots the “i’s” of His plans and blueprints for the ages with stars. He sends birth announcements by the way of angels. He brings gifts to this “Prince of Peace” born in a stable, not by express mail but by a caravan of wealthy and learned magi from the east.
One of my most cherished books is the classic “Ben Hur” by General Lew Wallace. In it he weaves the long arduous journey of the wise men from the east as one of his colorful sub-plots. This journey to find the Christ child, the Christ of Christmas, is still a long journey. But the find is well worth the sacrifice and difficulties of the journey. You must traverse the mountains of unbelief, the deserts of commercialization, secularism, materialism, and sin and the valley of darkness, deception, and the devil’s destruction. (John 10:10) But “wise men still seek Him”. He is the light of the world (Luke 1:78, 79).
When King Herod learned of the appearance of the wise men and their inquiring “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:1, 2) When Herod heard this he was troubled and summoned all the chief priests and scribes to find out where the Christ was to be born. They determined that the prophets foretold of His birth in Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2)
Interesting enough, the priests and Jewish leaders did not rush to Bethlehem to search out this Christ, the anointed Messiah. How could they miss out on the greatest and grandest appearance of all times? But the wise men immediately departed in search of the Christ.
This Christmas season, this New Year in the new millennium, don’t miss out on the most exciting, wonderful, life changing discoveries of your life. It may have been a long journey for you but there is a treasure, a pearl of great price that awaits you, if, like the wise men, you will seek Him out. (See Isaiah 55:1-7) “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God. For He will abundantly pardon.”
In any long journey the first step is usually the most difficult. Follow the wise men.
First, they searched the scriptures concerning the Christ. (Isaiah 9:6; 7:14, Micah 5:2) Search the scriptures – they point to Christ. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10”17) The point of the arrow of history and life itself is Christ. (I Timothy 3:16)
Second, come before Him. Look to Jesus. “. . . behold, the star which they had seen . . . went before them . . . and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And . . . they saw the young child. . . “ (Matthew 2:9-11) See Christ as your Savior and Lord. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)
Third, submit your life to Him. Crown Him King and worship Him. “And they fell down and worshiped Him.” (Matthew 2:11) After they opened their treasures they presented to Christ gold – signifying His Deity; Frankincense and myrrh – speaking of His sacrifice and death on the cross for the sins of the world. Give Him the gift of you life and worship Him.
Fourth, “Being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed another way.” (Matthew 2:12) When, like the wise men, you make that long journey of faith and find Christ, it changes your life. When you receive Jesus as Savior and crown Him King of Kings and the Lord of your life, you “depart another way.” Your life is changed. (II Corinthians 5:17)
Yes it’s true - “Wise men still seek Him.” The long journey of faith is well worth the trip and well worth your all.
