A Lesson from Spiderman
| What would happen if you were bitten by a radioactive spider? Consider the plight of the super-hero Spiderman. Super-human power from being bitten by a radiant arachnid enabled Spiderman to do good deeds for people and vanquish evil. But the downside for Spiderman was that he could no longer have a normal relationship with his girlfriend. As Spiderman explained his situation to his love he made this statement, “For me, living an ordinary life is not an option anymore.” Far too many people settle for an ordinary hum-drum life. |
God created us to live a supernatural extraordinary life. Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10 NKJV). Once you experience the living Christ, an ordinary life is not an option anymore.
During Jesus’ ministry on earth he taught some things that were hard for some people to accept. Many of Christ’s followers left him. They went back to ordinary living. Jesus asked his disciples, “’Do you also want to go away? But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God’” (John 6:66-69). Perhaps the Word of God has offended you or you feel what God has asked you to do is too hard. You’ve been tempted to settle for an ordinary life. Consider what Peter concluded. Only Jesus has the words of eternal life. Do the trials of life seem too hard to bear? Look to Jesus. Anything is better than being nailed to a cross. Peter was saying, “After meeting Jesus Christ, for me, living an ordinary life is not an option anymore.”
How can we come to live an extraordinary, uncommon life?
First – BE SMITTEN BY THE REDEEMING LOVE OF GOD. Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider and his life was transformed. The apostle Paul was smitten by the love of God in Christ. His life was changed forever. Paul said, “For when we were without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly . . . But God demonstrated His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:14-15).
Second BE SPRIIT-FILLED AND INDWELT BY GOD. Those who receive Christ as Savior and Lord are “born again” from above and indwelt and empowered by the Holy Spirit of God. (John 3:3-8) “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). Christ invites you to a living fellowship with Him. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hears my voice and opens unto me, I will come into him and sup with him and he with me” (Revelation 3:10). This is a key to an uncommon life.
Third – BE A SERVANT TRANSFORMED BY INGESTING THE LIFE GIVING WORD OF GOD. Paul gives a key to living an uncommon, transformed life. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:1-2 NKJV). Let God’s Word transform you.
Once you meet the living Christ, living an ordinary life is not an option anymore.
