Learning From The Bees
|
They swarmed around us. I initially thought they were flies of some sort, that is until my four-year-old grandson started screaming and my son dropped to his knees in pain. My son had consented to help me move some cement blocks away from a fence. We had inadvertently disturbed a bee’s nest. My grandson was stung four times and my son nine times before they could get away. As painful as that experience was, we can learn some valuable lessons from the bees. We’ve all heard about “the birds and the bees,” but let’s consider some other of the numerous lessons we can learn from the bees. |
One of the most valuable and loved products from bees, of course, is honey. Not only do bears crave its sweetness, but humans consumed over 1.2 million tons of it worldwide during the last decade.
The Bible compares the taste of honey to the Word of God. “The precepts of the Lord… are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.” (Psalm 19, 8,10 NIV) “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103 NIV) As honey “Brightens the eyes,” so the Word of God satisfies and brings health and wholeness to our soul.
In the Old Testament, God pleads with a backslidden, rebellious nation to turn back to Him. God desired to bless the nation rather than disciplining them. “But I would feed you with the best foods. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.” (Psalm 81:16)
Pete Wheeler, one of England’s big honey producers, has been stung by the agriculture ministry, and he’s suing the government. Pete was advised by the officials to feed his bees green sugar. Now he has tons of green honey that no one wants.
We’re much like his bees. We become like the material we feed on. Read or view impure, dirty literature and movies, and you’ll produce an impure mind with impure manners and behavior. Feed your soul upon the Word of God and wholesome literature and you’ll display holy character and behavior. (See Philippians 4:8,9)
A mother gave her son a Bible as he left home to serve in the Armed Forces. On the flyleaf of the Bible she wrote, “This Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.” David said, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” As a bee stores the precious honey in its hive and protects it from thieves, what are you hiding in your heart?
A colony of bees are very organized. There are different kinds of bees in each colony and each one has a distinct job. There are the scouts, the soldiers, the workers and builders, and of course the Queen Bees. It is not an exaggeration to say they are as “busy as a bee,” God has gifted all with various functions, gifts and talents. To find happiness and purpose is to be busy for God’s glory, in the area where God has placed us. (See Romans 12.) Are you busy for the Lord?
A bee will sacrifice its life for the sake of the Queen Bee and the colony. When it loses its stinger it will die. Jesus uses a paradox when He teaches us that in order to find eternal life, we must lose our life for His sake; not physically, but spiritually. We must lay down self, self-centeredness, pride and ego. Christ must be Lord of our life. (See Romans 10:9,10.) “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” (See Luke 9:23-26.)
Some scientists once said that it is impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Aerodynamically the bumblebee should not be able to fly. But it does. The creator enabled it to do so.
The apostle Paul discovered and declared, “I can do all things, through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13.) “With God all things are possible,” (Matthew 19:26.) “All things are possible to him that believes.” (Mark 9:23.) Put your trust and faith in the Lord, “the maker of heaven and earth.” God has created you to fly higher than a bee. You can soar like an eagle if you learn to wait on the Lord in faith, prayer and praise. (See Isaiah 40:28-31.)
I’m stuck on honey. But more so, I’m stuck on Jesus. He is the “Honey in the Rock” that the Bible refers to. (Psalm 81:16). He brings sweetness and joy to the soul. His Word brightens the eyes and brings health and wholeness. He gave His life for us.
King David valued the Lord more than all his riches. “O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” (Psalm 34:8)
You can personally experience the joy of Jesus. Knowing your sins are forgiven and you are ready for heaven is as simple as following these steps
:
A – Admit you have sinned. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
B - Believe in Jesus. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
C - Confess and leave your sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
