Jesus Only

Glorious things have happened on Mt Hermon in Israel. In the gospel of Mark chapter 9 we find the brief but far reaching account of Jesus taking three of his disciples to the top of Mt Hermon. There, before the disciples, Jesus’ appearance was radically changed. He was “transfigured” and his clothes became gleaming white – whiter than any earthly process could ever make them. (Mark 9:2-12 NLT) Then something extraordinary happened – Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. What did Moses and Elijah talk about? They talked about how the scriptures foretold of the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross. (Mark 9:12-13)

Peter was so speechless that that he blurted out, “Teacher, this is wonderful! We will make three shrines – one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” (Mark 9:5 NLT). Manmade religion wants to worship at a shrine – to make a memorial. God doesn’t give us a shrine – He gives us a Savior. Not to be enshrined but to shine into our hearts – bringing light and life. (John 1)

Moses had many mountain-top experiences with God. After the exodus of Israel from Egypt, Moses asked to see God’s glory. On the mountain God caused His glory to pass by Moses and there God revealed His character to Moses. (Exodus 33:7-23; 34:5-9) The Psalmist David revealed to us that God made known His acts to the children of Israel but His ways to Moses. (Psalm 103:7)

On Mt Hermon (the Mount of Transfiguration) Peter, James, and John saw Jesus changed before their eyes. A cloud covered the mount and God the Father spoke saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him” (Mark 9:7-8). You can have a life transforming change in your life by doing these three things.

First – LOOK to Jesus. He is not a mere man, a religious icon, a guru, or another rabbi. He is the Son of God. He is the fulfillment of Moses’ serpent on the pole. (Numbers 21:4-9) Jesus took the curse of sin that we deserve. (John 3:14) Jesus became our healer. (Isaiah 53:5; I Peter 2:24) Paul’s purpose and passion was to know him personally and intimately and the “power of his resurrection”. (Philippians 3:9-10) As we look to him, we are changed from glory to glory. (II Corinthians 3:17-18)

Second – LISTEN to Jesus. The Father said, “Listen to him” (Mark 9:7). When you listen and obey his voice (his words), Jesus’ life and power will clean and change you. (John 15)

Third – LOVE Jesus. After hearing the voice of God speak from the cloud, the disciples looked around and Moses and Elijah were gone. They saw only Jesus. Only Jesus is the all sufficient one. Only he can satisfy your soul. When Jesus began talking about his sacrificial death on the cross, many of his followers left him. He asked his disciples, “Will you go away also?” Peter replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:68-69). Have you come to know and believe in Him? Love Jesus.

When I worship the Lord, many times I use an aid that helps me focus on Jesus. I go through the alphabet and list the attributes of Jesus beginning with each letter. Try doing that in your own “devotional time”. Take the initials of your name and consider what attributes of Jesus begin with those letters. Thank God that He is and that He fulfills those attributes.

The following list is an example. Add your own to the list. Jesus is: A – able; B – beloved; C – compassionate; D – defender; E – eternal; F – faithful; G – guide; H – holy; I – infinite; J – just; K – kind; L – light; M – merciful; N – nurturer; O – omnipotent; P – provider; Q – quick; R – refuge; S – shepherd; T – teacher; U – unchangeable; V – victorious; W – wonderful; X – xcellent; Y – Yahweh; Z – zealous.

As the disciples descended the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until he, the Son of Man, had risen from the dead. Guess what? He is risen from the dead! Jesus is Lord! As the song says, “Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is Lord”.
