Holy Hummingbirds

What a beautiful morning to soak up the sun and enjoy God’s wonderful creation. As I sat in our backyard swing I was fascinated as I watched hummingbirds feast at the nectar feeders suspended from our patio roof. As I pondered the particular problems we were going through, they seemed to take flight as God reminded me of the unique creation of even the smallest bird. The hummingbirds are able to hover in space as their little wings beat up and down in a whirl like miniature helicopters. God feeds them and directs their yearly migration.

Does not our creator know, plan, and direct the details of our life as we trust him? After all, we all were uniquely made in God’s image. Shortly after the experience with my backyard hummingbirds I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a SUV – “Let Go and Let God”. The prophet Isaiah said, “Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).
After watching the antics of the hummingbirds, I had an interesting conversation with my friend Phil. Phil’s wife, Sherri, just lost her grandmother whom she had been very close to and was having a hard time dealing with her death. Phil shared that Sherri had been sitting on their deck praying and crying at 8:15 am. She closed her eyes and felt the powerful presence of God fill her. God seemed to say, “Be still and know that I am God.” She felt a fluttering in front of her face and opened her eyes. Hovering before her and looking her in the face was a beautiful hummingbird. A perfect peace and comfort filled her heart. God knew that hummingbirds were her grandmother’s favorite bird. She even collected hummingbird memorabilia.
That afternoon Sherri called her cousin in Ohio who also was having difficulty handling their grandmother’s death. Sherri shared her experience with the hummingbird and was amazed to hear that at the exact same time her cousin also had a visit from a hummingbird which brought her much comfort.
Could those hummingbirds have been sent by a loving and caring God? I think it was not a coincidence that a hummingbird visited each of them at exactly the same time – in two different states and two different time zones? When I see a hummingbird it reminds me of God’s holy angels hovering around us. “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14 NKJV)
God speaks to us in many different ways. Just observe and listen. (Romans 1:18-21) God especially speaks through His Son. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; . . . When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:1-4 NKJV).
Take a lesson from the hummingbirds, as small as they are. “If God be for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? . . . And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love” (Romans 8:31, 32, 38 NLT).
