The Highway to Heaven

A few years ago, Michael Landon was cast as an angel in the popular television series, “Highway to Heaven.” As an angel, he was sent to help sincere, but struggling, people and urge them to take the “highway to heaven.”

In the United States, we are fortunate to have thousands of miles of the best highways in the world. We can travel just about anywhere in the country in a matter of hours or a few days at the most. But to reach your destination, you must make sure that you are on the right road, headed in the right direction. It doesn’t matter how smooth and scenic the highway might be, if you’re on the wrong highway, or going the wrong direction, you will not reach your destination.

One of the most valuable tools for travel is a good map or atlas. For those with a bad sense of direction, a compass would be an asset. For those traveling the highway to heaven, there is the perfect road map and compass – the Bible, God’s Word. Don’t leave home without it!

In my college days, when I would return home, I would take interstate 90 to the Beloit/Rockford exit and then to Highway 51 south. But first, I had to pay tolls at a series of tollbooths. On one particular occasion, after fueling up, I discovered that I did not have any money left to pay the toll. I had to detour several miles to get back on Highway 51. Thank God, the highway to heaven has no tolls. Jesus paid it all when He died on the cross for our sins. We can’t even work our way to heaven. Salvation is a free gift. “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)

I love driving the super-highways. On these multiple lane highways, you can quickly pass up slower moving vehicles and usually bypass smaller towns that may slow you up. But Jesus cautions us that the highway to heaven is straight and narrow. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14; KJV) It is the “road less traveled,” but it leads to life eternal.

This highway to heaven is a highway of holiness. The Bible emphasizes that without holiness, no one shall see God. (See Hebrews 12:14) “And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the way faring men, though fools, shall not err therein. (Isaiah 35:8, KJV)

In Daily Awakenings, evangelist Stephen Hill describes this highway of holiness:

“1. To get on the highway of holiness, you must first make the right turn. That is, whatever road you’re going down now, you must catch the on ramp. The only way onto this highway is through the Blood of Jesus Christ. The destination is heaven, and Jesus said, ‘I AM the way.’

2. To make progress on this highway, you must keep your foot on the accelerator. That is, you must continually move forward. There is no turning back. You will encounter numerous distracting billboards and demonic off ramps. My friend, stay on the main highway.

3. To ensure your continual progress, you must stay between the lines. This had to do with holiness, and the Bible clearly marks the proper direction.

4. Be sure, on the highway of holiness, to keep your vehicle (soul) tuned up. Make sure you check the oil. The Master Mechanic (Holy Spirit) will keep your engine running smooth if you’ll submit to His vehicle inspection.

5. You must stay on this highway until you reach your destination. Don’t settle for Satan’s substitutes. The devil’s rest stops can turn into death stops. Take heed to these simple rules, and you’ll be well on your way.”

Are you traveling the highway to heaven? There is only one highway that leads to eternal life and it’s found in the person of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of the world. You can travel that road to heaven. Follow these simple steps:

A. Admit you have sinned. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
(Romans 3:23)

B. Believe in Jesus. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

C. Confess and leave your sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
