Help From Above
| The story is told of a man who fell over a cliff. As he plunged downward he was fortunate enough to grab hold of a protruding tree limb. He held on for dear life but was quickly losing his strength. “Help me! Is anybody up there?” he called out. After what seemed to be an eternity a voice called down, “Just let go of the branch. You’ll be saved.” “Help me!” the man cried. Unbeknownst to the man, the tree limb was only a few feet above a ledge with a path that would lead him to safety. “Trust me, just let go and you’ll be okay,” the voice called back. The man hesitated, “Is anybody else up there?” |
We all need help from above. The other day my wife gave me a copy of a prayer she said I needed to pray. “I want to thank you, Lord, for being close to me so far this day. With your help, I haven’t been impatient, lost my temper, grumpy, judgmental, or envious of anyone. But, I will be getting out of bed in a minute, and I think I’ll really need your help then. Amen.”
In the Word of God we can find help from above. Jesus is the living Word who came from above to redeem and help us. But only as we trust Him and fully surrender to Him can we find help from above. Let’s examine some holy scriptures that offer us help from above. In them we find:
THE LOVE OF GOD – “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 NKJV).
To me, one of the most moving verses in the gospels is John 13:1, “Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.”
Jesus taught about the shepherd who left 99 sheep in the wilderness to search for the one lost sheep. (Luke 15) He referred to himself as the Good Shepherd who gave his life for the sheep. (John 10) He said, “Greater love has no one than this to lay down one’s life for his friend’s” (John 15:13). God sent us help from above by sending us His Son. “And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Revelation 1:5).
GOD’S MERCY – All the help we receive from above is because of God’s mercy alone. The psalmist David tells us that we can have God’s goodness and mercy following us all the days of our life. God’s provision, protection, peace, pardon, and promise of eternal life in paradise flow from God’s goodness and mercy. (Psalm 23) We could never earn it or deserve it. “For your mercy is great above the heavens and your truth reaches to the clouds” (Psalm 108:4). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5 NKJV).
GOD’S INVITATION – To have help from above we must fully trust and surrender to Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24). Believe and receive help from above today.
