Heavenly Music
|
It’s been said that music is the language of soul. Music is definitely the language of heaven. Some have told of hearing heavenly music on their deathbed, even though those around them do not hear anything. I believe God welcomes His children home with heavenly music. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones” (Psalm 116:15 NASB). Our creator is a God of music and we were made in His image, so it stands to reason that man has been given music to express what’s in his soul. |
It may shock some to realize that God loves and enjoys His creation so much that He sings over them. “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). That’s how God feels about you. Our God is a singing God. This brings us to a simple but startling conclusion – the only thing that makes life livable is enjoying the joy that comes from knowing one is enjoyed by God. When you come to this realization there is birthed a song in your soul that must be expressed.
The Psalmist David was perhaps the most prolific composer and exuberant singer/musician of all times. David wrote most of the book of Psalms and much of it was set to music and sung in worship to God. Consider this Psalm – “Come let us sing to the Lord! Let us give a joyous shout to the rock of our salvation! Let us come before him with thanksgiving. Let us sing to Him psalms of praise. For the Lord is a great God, the great King above all gods. He owns the depths of the earth and even the mightiest mountains are His….Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for He is our God and we are the people he watches over, the sheep of his care” (Psalm 95:1-7 NLT).
Music has many benefits and avenues of expression. Research has shown that the music center of the brain is a common link between many other brain areas – singing connects to the speech and language centers of the brain and playing musical instruments strengthens the problem solving and reasoning centers. Music makes everything work together and strengthens the neural pathways for learning and remembering. Heavenly music not only enables us to express our soul and worship God, it also helps us learn about God. “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16). When grace is in the heart the result is heavenly music.
All of God’s creation was made with a capacity to give expression to the heart and soul through music. Sadly some feel that if they cannot be a virtuoso or good at a certain activity then it is not worth doing. Some miss out on many enjoyable things in life for that reason. When was the last time you did something you weren’t good at just for the fun of it? I’m amazed at the vast variety and forms of music. Man in his creativity has always invented new ways to make music, from Jamaican oil-drums to Cajun washboards to electronic computers. I’d love to try my hand on those steel drums. Perhaps, like me, you do not have a good singing voice. That’s no problem, for the Bible urges us to simply “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” (Psalm 100:1). It’s heavenly music in the ears of God.
The Bible seems to indicate that Lucifer was a glorious archangel with extra-ordinary musical abilities before his rebellion and disbarment from heaven. He knows the value and power of music and does all he can to distort and pervert it.
My daughter and son-in-law, who now live in Nashville, TN, recently took my wife and myself on a tour of the city. There are many beautiful areas but I noticed the dozens of clubs and “honky-tonks” as we drove down music row. Much of the music that emanates from there tells of “wine, women, and woe”. Heavenly music on the other hand uplifts and tells of joy, peace, and faith. The Word of God admonishes us “Don’t be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts” (Ephesians 5:18, 19 NLT).
Good music must have harmony. Musicians know the importance of being in tune. When we are in harmony with God, others, and ourselves heavenly music begins to resonate from the heart. Some music is filled with discord, disharmony, and depression. Heavenly music is filled with faith, hope, and love.
When one receives a new life in Christ, God gives a new song. The Psalmist David speaks of a new song. “O sing unto the Lord a new song…sing unto the Lord…show forth his salvation from day to day” (Psalm 96:1, 2). “I will sing of mercy and judgment unto thee, O Lord, will I sing” (Psalm 101:1).
Are you singing the same old song? You can have a new song and be filled with heaven’s music. (See II Corinthians 5:17.) It’s the song of the soul set free.
A - Admit you have sinned. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
B - Believe in Jesus. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
C - Confess and leave your sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
