God’s Shield

A Roman soldier was one of the most disciplined and feared fighting man of his day. They would march into battle under an onslaught of arrows and fiery missiles. One of the most valuable pieces of his equipment was a shield. There were various types of shields. The most effective shield was the three-sided shield. A soldier could be protected in front and on both sides from flying arrows.

David, a mighty warrior, described his protection in Psalm 92, “His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night nor for the arrow that flieth by day” (Psalm 91:4-5). A condition of God’s protection was to “set our love upon” God. (Psalm 91:14) Jesus said, “If you love me keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

In God’s Word, Peter gives us three commands that will keep us under God’s shield of protection. “Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King” (I Peter 2:17). As we relate properly to these three, we can trust God for a three-sided shield of protection from the enemy.

First – LOVE THE BROTHERHOOD. Do you love your brothers and sisters in Christ? Do you humbly submit to each other in love? Do you respect and honor them? Do not listen to slander of God’s children. Pray for them. (I Thessalonians 2:1-3) Don’t give the devil an opening.

Second – FEAR GOD. The fear of the lord breeds honor. John Bevere, in his book Undercover, says that, “those who fear God are those who keep before them the Lord of glory’s high and lofty position. They have met with and been consumed by His far reaching authority. They esteem what He esteems and hates what He hates. Firmly planted within their lives are reverential fear and respect for all in leadership because God has delegated His authority.”

Third – HONOR THE KING. Peter exhorts, “For the Lord’s sake, yield [submit] to the people who have authority in this world; the King, who is the highest authority and the leaders who are sent by him” (I Peter 2:13-14 NCV).

Stay under the protection of God’s three-sided shield. If you don’t, you could be shot with an arrow that flies “at noonday”.
