Is God Pro-Life?
|
Please ask yourself this question – Is God pro-life? Absolutely! There is no doubt about it. God’s Word is unmistakable. “Thou shall not kill” is one of the Ten Commandments. “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19). God is the Creator and sustainer of life. Once, while discussing the abortion issue with a politician, the remark was made that abortion is a moral issue. I concurred. But is not the law of our land and Judeo-Christian ethics based on the concept of a moral God and moral code? |
It is wrong to steal because it is immoral to steal. It is wrong to sell drugs because it is immoral to sell drugs. Killing is illegal because it is immoral to kill. The moral law of God teaches us that God is pro-life. When there is neither fear of God nor love of God, there is no moral restraint.
When does life begin? At the moment of conception, a new, unique human life is formed. The human life, while only a single cell, contains a new genetic blueprint that is unique from both mother and father. Most college textbooks on developmental biology teach that conception results in the formation of a new life. The Bible emphasizes the value of all human life, including life in the womb. David writes, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in you book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-16 NIV). God loves and knows each human life. To abort a new life is to destroy God’s handiwork and to disregard God’s plans ordained for that new life.
Dr Chris Edwardson of Dallas, OR says, “The sanctity of life comes from our relationship with God. Abortion is a violation because God considers life precious and valuable. Abortion is the taking of the life of an unborn child. I am a doctor for both the mother and the child. I cannot choose one over the other.”
Some try to justify abortion by considering the quality of life that a person may have. But the quality of life is not something one person has the right to make a judgment about concerning another person. God loves us regardless of physical or mental imperfections and values each life. God can enable each person to live beyond his or her limitations. When Moses used his severe speech impediment as an excuse, God replied, “Who gave man his mouth? Who made him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (Exodus 4:11, 12). There is hope for each life to have meaning and purpose, until God calls them home.
Most women, who choose to have an abortion, have a crisis that they are facing, and feel they have no other choice. But there are other compassionate alternatives such as child placement services and maternity homes that will help them through their crisis and if they desire, help them place their baby for adoption in a loving home.
Dr Richard Dobbins said, concerning the sanctity of life –
“The human body was created from the dust of the earth and brought to life by the breath of God. This sets us apart from every creature on earth. We are a special creation of God designed to house His presence on earth. As the Westminster Confession reminds us, ‘The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.’ This is what sets human beings apart from the rest of creation.
“For the past three decades secular education has denied our children and youth an awareness of their uniqueness by banning the Bible from the campuses of public schools. At the same time, environmentalists have pressed their agenda of conservation and animal protection with vigor and enthusiasm.
“As Christians, we want to be good stewards of the land and animal life. However, treating human beings as the accidental offspring of a process of evolution is cheapening human life. So, Today, Americans are in the ridiculous position of legally protecting the spotted owl and snail darters while aborting 1.5 million of our own babies every year.
“Stripping human life of its sanctity and reducing people to the level of animals deprives us of meaning and purpose in life. Every child born into this world has the capacity to reflect the image of God and the gospel gives him/her that opportunity.”
God is pro-life. Are you? God cares about you and wants you to have eternal life. Perhaps you are a survivor of and abortion or have advised someone to have one and are now experiencing guilt and trauma. God loves you and offers forgiveness and healing.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9, 10).
Let us pray for God’s will to be reflected in society.
