God’s Boomerang

Noah, my grandson, is adept at throwing a boomerang. If it misses its target, it will circle around back to him. The boomerang is most commonly associated with the Aborigines of Australia. The Aborigines use it for hunting as well as a weapon. Its bent or angular shape can be thrown in a way so as to return to or near its starting point. When I was a child I had a boomerang that was basically ornamental. I could never get it to come back to me.

Perhaps you have heard the saying, “What goes around comes around.” But throughout the Bible we find that God has a law or principle that is even more precise

than the boomerang. We find many scriptural principles such as, “He who digs a pit for another will fall into it and he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him” (Proverbs 26:27). “Cast your bread upon the waters and after many days it will return to you” (Ecclesiastes 11:1). God watches over His Word to perform it. Our actions and words sets God’s boomerang principle into motion.

Jesus taught much about God’s boomerang. Notice these principles and carefully examine your heart. (Luke 6:37:38 NLT) 1) “Do not judge others and you will not be judged” (v 37). 2” “Do not condemn or it will come back against you” (v 37). 3) “Forgive others and you will be forgiven” (v 37). 4) “Give and your gift will return to you in full – pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap” (v 38). 5) “The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (v 38). God’s boomerang principle will bring a correction or a blessing to your life.

Several times a day we are throwing out our “boomerang”. We learn from others how to act and react to situations. Jesus said, “Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher” (Luke 6:40 NLT). That’s a powerful statement. Be careful who you follow. “Can a blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?” The ultimate teacher is Jesus. Study his character and conduct. Invite Him to come into your heart and life. Ask Him to fill up the empty places in your life.

Before throwing your boomerang, make sure your vision is clear. Jesus said, “Why worry about a speck in your friends eye when you have a log in your own eye . . . First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’ eye” (Luke 6:41-42 NLT).

Yes, God’s boomerang principle will bring a correction or a blessing. I’ve not been very adept at throwing a boomerang. But the Lord teaches us how to effectively throw a spiritual boomerang. Jesus’ answer is LOVE – God’s love. “Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you . . . Pray for those who hurt you . . . Love your enemies, then your reward from heaven will be very great and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High” (Luke 6:27-36 NLT).

When you make Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of your life, His Holy Spirit will fill you will God’s agape love. (Romans 5:5) Make sure you are throwing your boomerang accurately with God’s love. It’s a powerful weapon – a biblical principle, with a promised blessing.
