Five Wonderful Promises

A promise is only as real and as wonderful as the one who made it. Perhaps you have had someone make a promise to you that you took a “wait and see” attitude toward the promise made. Why? Is it because of that person’s insincerity or untrustworthiness in the past? Perhaps you have been disappointed by unfulfilled or empty promises of a friend, spouse, or loved one. If so, I have good news for you. “God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has He said and will He not do it? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19 NKJV) God not only is totally trustworthy, He has the power to exceedingly and abundantly perform all of His promises. (Ephesians 3:20; II Peter 1:40)

God not only is totally trustworthy and powerful, He is willing to perform His great and precious promises. The apostle Paul tells us that in Christ, “All the promises of God in Him are yes and in Him amen, to the glory of God through us” (I Corinthians 1:20 NKJV). The Word of God is full of the promises of God. But we must believe God. We are to follow the example of those “who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:12).

As you read the Word of God take note of the many precious promises of God available to you and by faith and obedience receive and appropriate them. In John chapter 14 Jesus gives us five wonderful promises.

First – a PLACE IN PARADISE. “’Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself; that where I am there you may be also.’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:1-3, 6). Jesus promised to prepare a place for those who follow him. Man has an eternal soul. When we die we will either spend eternity in hell or heaven. Jesus is the way.

Second – a PURPOSE WITH POWER. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to my Father.” (John 14:12). Our greatest purpose is to know God, enjoy fellowship with Him and fulfill our eternal destiny by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Third - a POWERFUL PRIVILEGE IN PRAYER. “And whatever you ask in my name that I will do that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it” (John 14:13-14). Prayerlessness is sin. (I Samuel 12:23) All the great and precious promises of God are appropriated by faith and prayer. Prayers are answered not because of our worthiness but because of His worthiness. Pray in Jesus name.

Fourth – a PROMISED PARAKLETOS (Greek – advocate, comforter, intercessor, helper). “If you love me, keep my commandments and I will pray the Father and He will give you another helper that He may abide with you forever, even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:15-17). Jesus promised a greater presence and power for every disciple. The Holy Spirit will live in every believer and give power. (Acts 1:8)

Fifth – a PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). It is a peace greater than the world gives. We never have to be afraid, because “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (I John 4:46). Receive the Prince of Peace as your Savior and Lord. Believe His wonderful promises.
