The First Fruit

Spring has arrived! The lilacs are blooming. The cherry and apple blossoms are in full color wafting their fragrances through the air. The bees are buzzing and the birds are busy building their nests. The splendor of God’s creation is awe-inspiring

Someone recently asked me a question concerning God’s creation. “What was the first fruit?” they asked. What do you believe it was? The Word of God is silent on the specific type of fruit. Some would speculate that the first fruit was an apple. Some have even called the round like ball in the front of a man’s throat an “Adam’s Apple”.

I do not think that the first fruit was necessarily an apple or an orange. Some people must think that the first fruit was a banana because they think that mankind evolved from a monkey. We are not told by God in His Word exactly what the first fruit was.

It is very interesting that the first gardener – fruit grower – was God. “Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east and there He placed the man He created. And the Lord God planted all sorts of trees in the garden – beautiful trees that produced delicious fruit. At the center of the garden He placed the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” (Genesis 2:8-9 NLT). This is a clue as to what the first fruit may have been.

I believe it is possible that the first fruit was taken from the Tree of Life. In the beginning Adam and Eve were meant to live forever. Even though they were told by God not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil they were NEVER told not to eat the fruit of the Tree of Life. Thus the first fruit could possibly have been the Fruit of Life. When Adam and Eve ate of the Fruit of Life, they had the capacity to live forever with health and everlasting life. (Genesis 3:22-23)

When Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent (Satan) to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, sin and death came upon mankind and all of God’s creation suffered. God banished them from the Garden of Eden lest they would eat the fruit of the Tree of Life and live forever. (Genesis 3:22-24 and II Corinthians 11:2-3) Ever sense the fall of man, there are people who act like fruitcakes and fruit baskets. Sin distorts, debases, and destroys.

God still loved Adam’s children so He planted a second tree on a hill called Calvary. There the “Second Adam” – Jesus Christ – died for the sins of the world on an old rugged cross. (I Corinthians 15:45-49) All who partake of that tree by faith will live forever. Jesus took the curse that came on all of Adam’s children and all of creation through Adam’s sin. The Word of God says, “cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree” (Deuteronomy 21:23). Christ rescued us from the curse when he was hung on the cross. (Galatians 3:10-14 NLT) Peter points us back to the prophecy of Isaiah 53 when he says, “And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, for by His wounds you were healed” (I Peter 2:24 NASB).

Before Jesus went to the cross, he gathered his disciples for what became known as the “Last Supper”. There he instituted what we call the “Lord’s Supper” or “Communion”. “And while they were eating Jesus took some bread and after a blessing He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, ‘Take, eat, this is My body.’ And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:26-29 NASB).

Jesus taught us that the fruit of the vine – grape juice – when partaken of at communion, was a type or representation of His blood that was shed on the cross. When we receive Christ by faith as our Redeemer and Savior, His sacrifice on the cross brings forgiveness of sins and eternal life as we are born again spiritually. (John 3.)

The Word of God reveals that the Tree of Life that was in the Garden of Eden still exists but is now in heaven. All who receive Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord are promised the right to someday eat of the Fruit of the Tree of Life which is now in heaven. (Revelation 2:7 and 22:2, 14.)

God desires all of His creation to live with Him forever. But you must make the decision. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Partake of the fruit from the Tree of Life – Jesus – today.
