Father Abraham

My father died of cancer when he was 52 years old. At my age now, 52 seems such a relative young age. My father left a legacy of hard work, honesty, and goodness. On Father’s Day we remember and honor our fathers and the legacy they have left us. What legacy are we leaving for our children and grandchildren? I hope and pray that I leave a lasting spiritual legacy for my children and grandchildren.

One of the most revered fathers in the Bible is Abraham. Miraculously, Abraham and Sara were enabled by God to have the promised child when he was 100 and she was 90.

Abraham’s faith did not waver and the Word of God tells us that he became the father of “all who believe.” In one of the most exciting and breathtaking passages of the letters of Paul (Romans 4 and 5), we discover the rich legacy father Abraham left for us and how to posses and enjoy this legacy.

First – Abraham was REVERED because of his faith. Abraham became the father of the Jewish nation. But God’s Word makes it clear that Abraham’s goodness and hard work did not make him acceptable to God. “If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the scriptures tell us, ‘Abraham believed God and God counted him as righteousness because of his faith.’ When people work, their wages are not a gift but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous not because of their work but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners” (Romans 4:2-5 NLT). It is faith that God reveres. Your faith brings glory to God.

Second – Abraham was made RIGHTEOUS by faith alone. “So, Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith. God had already accepted him and declared him to be righteous, even before he was circumcised” (Romans 4:9-12 NLT). Imagine yourself at a store. On the shelf you see something you’ve needed and wanted for years, but the price is too high, making it unaffordable. How would you feel if a caring friend or relative bought the item, gift wrapped it, and gave it to you? Thank God for giving you a gift you could never afford. We receive the gift of grace, forgiveness, and righteousness by faith alone.

Third – Abraham had a ROCK SOLID faith. (Romans 4:20-25) His faith never wavered in believing God. In fact it grew stronger. This is how we bring glory to God. Abraham’s faith is recorded for our benefit. God’s Word assures us that we will also be counted as righteous if we believe Him and accept Christ’s work on the cross. Christ was raised from the dead for our justification.

Fourth – Abraham had a RESURECTION faith. “This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing” (Romans 4:16-17 NLT). Abraham put Isaac, his only son, on the altar of sacrifice believing God could bring new life. What seems impossible to you is possible with God.

Fifth – Abraham had a REJOICING faith. (Romans 4:7-8; 5:1-3, 11) “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight, yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord had cleared of sin” (Romans 4:7-8 NLT).

Rejoice because of what Jesus Christ has done for us. “Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory” (Romans 5:1-2 NLT).

Abraham is the father of all who believe. Do you believe? (Romans 10:9)
