Extreme Makeover

Susan Tom, a single parent of seven adopted children with disabilities, didn’t set out to adopt children with special needs but somehow they found each other. After her divorce, Susan, a mother of four (two biological and two adopted) became a foster parent and soon fell in love with the children no one else wanted. Taking in children with challenges hasn’t been easy. Xenia and Hannah were born with spinal bifida and confined to a wheelchair; Cloe was born unable to bend her elbows and knees and getting around the house is extremely difficult; Katie was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and is mentally challenged; Faith was badly burned as a baby and encounters stares from strangers every day of her life; Margaret was not expected to live because of brain damage.

Now she is a thriving 21 year old who works full-time and helps out with her siblings as she pursues her dream of becoming a pediatric nurse. “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” will give back to a woman who has given so much love to children in need by providing a new home for her family – one that is tailored to their special needs.

On their 10th wedding anniversary – April 11, 2005 – Pastor John White suffered a heart attack and died. He left behind his wife, Danna, and their five children. His family had no choice but to move as they had been living in the church parsonage. Danna was able to purchase some property and two run-down contractor trailers – trailers without heat, a working kitchen, locks on the doors, carpet, or power. The kids had to sleep at friend’s houses just to stay warm. Church members and the community rallied around them and helped them get a new home – an “Extreme Makeover”.

It warms our hearts when we see or hear of people in need getting an “Extreme Makeover”. One TV reality program helps people with physical deformities get an extreme makeover to improve their self image. But while it is wonderful to get an extreme makeover in our living conditions or our physical appearance – a greater need for an extreme makeover exists on the inside of us. We all need an extreme makeover in our spirit and soul. One can have an extreme makeover in their living conditions or physical appearance but if their inner person is not changed they are not truly happy or fulfilled in the long-term of life. But the good news is that God specializes in “Extreme Makeovers” from the inside out

. Why do we need an “Extreme Makeover”? The Word of God tells us, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin (our sin nature and disobedience to God) pollutes and darkens our soul, spirit, and body. Sin separates us from God. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Sadly only a select few can be chosen for an “Extreme Makeover Home Edition”. But God has made it possible that whoever wills can have an “Extreme Makeover” from the inside out. You can experience the reality and power of this great promise, “Therefore if any man is in Christ he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold all things are new” (II Corinthians 5:17). One day this earth will also experience an “Extreme Makeover”. (Revelation 21)

In Psalm 103 David praised God for his “Extreme Makeover”. You too have been called for an “Extreme Makeover”. Will you accept? “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
