Every Which Way But Up

Billy Joe was a simple young man who lived in a small village in the hills of Kentucky. Nothing much ever happened in his little town. Billy Joe loved to dress in Army fatigues and direct traffic at one of the two stop signs that stood sentinel at the center of the small town. Nobody ever paid much attention to Billy Joe. Everyone knew he was “slow” but harmless.

One hot summer morning, Billy Joe had one of the most exciting things in his life happen to him. As usual, he was standing on the street corner directing the occasional vehicle that passed by.

All of a sudden a convoy of Army National Guard jeeps and big trucks rolled down the hill into town. Billy Joe’s eyes grew big and his chest puffed up at the opportunity to do his duty. He stepped out into the street, put his whistle into his mouth, and directed the convoy to take a right turn. The driver of the lead vehicle saluted as he made a right turn. The rest of the convoy followed suit as Billy Joe continued to direct the traffic. But the convoy soon came to a grinding halt as they came to a dead end. They had taken a wrong turn and went the wrong way. As they reached the dead end, the lead driver realized there was no where to turn around. A red faced sergeant ran back to the last vehicle and barked orders for the whole convoy to back up through town until they could get on the right road. Meanwhile, Billy Joe realized something was terribly wrong and decided it was time for him to head over to the Coffee Cup Café for his morning coffee and donut.

Have you ever taken a wrong turn and headed the wrong way? Sometimes we are just too proud to stop and ask directions. Perhaps we were given faulty or wrong directions and discovered we were lost. Some people are determined to find their own way or, like I have done a few times, take a short cut that usually gets me lost.

One day Jesus was speaking of His eminent death on the cross. He told His disciples to not let their heart be troubled. He was going away but He was going to prepare a place for His followers. He assured them that He would come back for them and receive them unto Himself – that where He was, they would be also. Jesus then gave these directions to His place, “And where I go you know and the way you know” (John 14:1-6). Thomas was perplexed. He said, “Lord, we do not know where you are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus then clarified the directions, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jesus gave us directions to abundant, everlasting life and to His place in heaven. Many people are going the wrong direction. They are looking every which way but up. Jesus made the way very clear. There are three turns that will lead you to abundant, everlasting life. (John 14:6)

First – JESUS IS THE WAY. Some people believe that there are many roads to heaven. Jesus clearly pointed to the only way. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is no other mediator between God and man than the God-man – Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “If I be lifted up I will draw all men to me.” Jesus was lifted up on the cross to take the curse of sin and death upon himself for you and me.

Whatever problem or perplexity you are facing, Jesus is the way. He is the way maker. What is the remedy? Believe! “Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also In me” (John 14:1). Jesus is the way to the Father in heaven. Jesus is the Finisher of that of which He is the Author or Beginner of. If He has prepared a place for us, He will prepare us for that place. Believe in Him.

Second – JESUS IS THE TRUTH. Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies of a Savior and Messiah. Jesus taught us the truth of the Word of God. Pilate asked, “What is truth?” He sentenced Jesus to be crucified and then tried to wash his hands of Jesus. Jesus is the truth. No one comes to the Father but by Him. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” Jesus is the Truth. Do you know Him?

Third – JESUS IS THE LIFE. He is the Life by whose life giving Spirit the dead in sin are quickened by Him as the Life and taught by Him as the Truth, to come by Him as the Way. The Word of God tells us clearly, “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (I John 5:1-13). If you have Jesus you have life that is abundant and eternal.

Make sure you are on the right road – the Jesus road. He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Receive Him today. “For as many as received Him gave He the right to become children of God, even as many as believed on His name” (John 1:12).
