Even the Sparrow
|
Bird watching is an interesting hobby. I get excited when I observe an exotic, rare, or large bird. I am in good company – both David and Jesus were bird watchers. But I tend to ignore or take for granted the humble sparrow. A sparrow is perhaps the most ordinary, colorless, and numerous of all bird species. But these common unspectacular birds are hardy, adapt, and thrive in almost any locale and climate. God takes special interest in the sparrow. Jesus taught us that our heavenly Father takes note of each sparrow that falls to the ground. |
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29-31).
Jesus told us that we can learn much from the birds of the air. “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they neither reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:26) If God cares for the sparrows, how much more does He care for those created in His image? (Genesis 1:27)
Sometimes we feel like God has forsaken us; we feel so alone. David had times when he felt alone and depression stalked him like a dark desolate shadow. David cried out to the Lord, “I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. I watch and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top” (Psalm 102:6-7). But after expressing his feelings, David declared, “When the Lord shall build up Zion, He shall appear in His glory. He will regard the prayer of the destitute and not despise their prayer” (Psalm 102:16-17). David then prophesied that this Psalm would be “written for the generations to come: the people who shall be created shall praise the Lord” (Psalm 102:18). When you feel like a lonely, insignificant sparrow, remember – God takes note of a single sparrow and He cares about you. Don’t pout or give in to self-pity or depression, but give praise to the Lord. Remember God’s promises. Praising God will lift you like an eagle. (Isaiah 40:25-31)
There is an interesting Psalm that David wrote for the sons of Korah and the chief musician to sing in the Tabernacle of God. In Psalm 84 David tells us how the Valley of Baca or “weeping and bitterness” can be turned into a well of life giving water. The key that David discovered was a longing for the courts or presence of the Living God. (Psalm 84:1-2)
Perhaps you feel common, ordinary, insignificant, unknown, or forgotten by God. David gives us this inspired verse, “Yea, the sparrow hath found a house and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee, Selah” (Psalm 84:3-4).
The Tabernacle was a specially designed tent prescribed by God where His glorious presence dwelt and Gods people could meet with Him to worship under the old covenant. David said, “Even a sparrow finds a home there” (Psalm 84:3 NLT). The point was that even an ordinary sparrow found a place to build a nest close to the Tabernacle and altar of God – how much closer can we be to God’s presence? Protection, peace, and the power and the joyful presence of God is ours when we come to God’s altar and live in His presence through prayer, praise, and the atoning blood sacrifice of God’s Son. (Isaiah 53) Even the ever busy and darting swallow raised her young near the altar of God. (Psalm 84:3) There is no better place to raise your children and grandchildren. The most common and ordinary of people can have the privilege of living in God’s presence. In fact, David said that he would rather be a doorman in the house of God than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand elsewhere” (Psalm 84:10). God gives a great promise to those who will receive His gift of grace and glory. (Psalm 84:11-12)
Even a sparrow does not go beyond God’s care and concern. You are more valuable to Him than a sparrow. A sparrow does not store up food but trusts its Creator for daily supply. “O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in Thee” (Psalm 84:12). Build your house close to Jesus. (Matthew 6:31-33) Seek Him first and foremost.
God rarely chooses the wise, mighty, and noble of this world. But those thought insignificant, ordinary, and despised. (I Corinthians 1:25-29) Why? “That no flesh should glory in his presence . . . He that glorieth let him glory in the Lord” (I Corinthians 1:29-31). Yes, even a sparrow can build a nest close to God. You can also be close to Him.
“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (I Corinthians 1:30).
Little sparrow, make the Lord Jesus Christ your everything.
