Do Angels Drive Snowplows?
|
December 1, 2006 was ushered in by one of the most damaging storms in about two decades in the Midwest. It rained all night on November 30th. After midnight the temperatures plummeted leaving a thick coat of ice on trees and power lines. By 4:00 am it had begun to snow and the trees and power lines began snapping and falling to the ground. Many parts of Central Illinois would be without power for three days to more than a week. I was in Decatur when the storm began. I started home at 7:00 am not knowing what was ahead of me. |
After several detours around fallen trees and power lines, I was finally able to get out of the city and onto the highway home which, by then, was covered with ice and snow. The wind had started to blow the snow across the open fields creating white-out conditions. For long stretches visibility was almost zero. I slowed down as much as possible as there were cars behind me. I suddenly hit a patch of ice and began to spin around in a circle. I couldn’t see anything because of the white-out conditions.
I prayed a loud and fervent prayer, “JESUS, HELP ME!” I was able to pull out of the spin but then went into another spin in the opposite direction. I steered with all the skills I could muster not knowing where I was – on the road or not. I came to a stop in what I figured was my lane. I thanked God profusely, “Father God, I can’t see a thing! Please send your angels to clear the way before me and get me safely home.” Suddenly two snow plows appeared right in front of me. They were driving side by side with their snow blades down and their truck beds up and spreading salt right in front of me. I saw at least six or seven cars in the ditches and fields on either side of the highway. The snowplows led the way as I headed on down the highway. There were long stretches where all I could see were the flashing back lights of the snowplows.
Did God send angels to drive those snowplows? I’m not certain. But it seemed odd that occasionally a car would pass me coming from the opposite direction. I remember thinking, “How in the world did those cars get through or around those snowplows?” The plows were side-by-side and seemed to take up the entire highway. A couple of miles across the county line they turned off. The weather conditions had greatly improved and with God’s help I safely arrived home.
I don’t know if angels drive snowplows but I know that angels are real. I know that God’s promises are true. “For he shall give his angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways . . . Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him, I will set him on high because he has known my name” (Psalm 91:11, 14). Have you set your love on the Lord? Do you know his name? By faith and prayer you can claim his promises for protection and provision.
Robin McGraw believes in angels. The wife of Dr Phil McGraw shares in her book Inside My Heart about her experience of rushing her gravely ill baby to the emergency room. As the doctors rushed him into surgery, Robin went to phone her father but was so distraught that she couldn’t even talk to him. There was a big man sitting in a chair by the phone who said to her, “Don’t worry. He’s just going to have a spinal tap. He’ll be fine.” The man stood up, took the phone from her, spoke something to her father and hung up the phone. When she looked up, the man was gone and she couldn’t find him anywhere. She believes in angels.
I was only in junior high when my dad’s aunt asked me to visit and pray for her daughter who was the same age as I was. Janet Henderson had a kidney disease. As I walked into her bedroom she proudly showed me a glow-in-the-dark plastic cross and Bible she had won for memorizing scripture verses in Sunday school. I visited with her and then prayed for her and went home. The next morning she told her mother that an angel had visited her during the night and told her that he would be back that afternoon to take her home to heaven where she would be in no more pain. He mother told her that she was just delirious from a high fever and that she was going to be fine. But Janet insisted that it was true. Sure enough at around 4:00 pm Janet sat up in bed and said, “Mother, do you hear the angels singing? They’re here.” With that Janet passed on to heaven. Was it just a coincidence or are angels real?
Do angels drive snowplows? I don’t know. But the Word of God reveals that angels are real. (Hebrews 13:2) God is real! Jesus is real! He’s coming back again for those who are ready to meet him. The Word of God says, “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Hebrews 1:7, 14) Are you an heir of salvation? Ministering angels are sent to help God’s children.
Angels announced the birth of Christ. An angel ministered to Jesus concerning his crucifixion. (Luke 23:43) An angel announced his resurrection. At Christ’s return, an angel will blow the last trumpet and his children will be caught up to meet him in the clouds. Yes, angels are real. But Jesus is so much better. (Hebrews 1:4)
Become an heir of salvation today. Through repentance and faith receive Christ today as your Savior and Lord. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).
