The Divine Yes

Miki, our golden retriever, is always read and willing. If you ask if she wants to go for a walk, go for a ride, play fetch or even take a bath, she is eager and ready to go. Ask Miki if she wants to go to the bank and she is in heaven. She knows the teller has a doggy treat just for her. Some people are like Miki, always ready, upbeat and positive. They view God as generous, kind, positive and always desirous to bless people. Unfortunately, some view God as stingy, negative and a reluctant spoil sport.

A recent television commercial showed a customer service rep for a large company training a new employee. "This job is easy," he said. "All you have to do is always tell your customers NO!" As he answered the phones, he repeatedly held up a sign that said, "NO!" Another company did a take on that commercial and emphasized that their business is to say "YES!"

How do you view God? More importantly, what does the Bible teach us about the character of God? Though God is not soft on sin and disobedience, and His holiness demands justice and judgement for sin, God is revealed as the Divine Yes.

The apostle Paul declared, "For the Son of God, Jesus Christ...was not yes and no, but in Him was yes. For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him amen, to the glory of God through us" (2 Corinthians 1:19, 20 NKJV).

Jesus is the Divine Yes. God is for you, not against you. The New Living Translation reads, "...because Jesus Christ, the Son of God, never wavers between yes and no. He is the one whom Timothy, Silas, and I preached to you, and he is the Divine Yes - God’s affirmation. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in him. That is why we say ‘Amen’ when we give glory to God through Christ" (2 Corinthians1:19, 20 NLT).

Some people are so negative that before you ask them something, you know they are going to say no. That’s their character. But Jesus is the Divine Yes. How does that apply to your life?

First, HE WAS AND IS ALWAYS READY TO DO THE FATHER'S WILL. "Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come - In the volume of the book it is written of me - to do your will, O God’" (Hebrews 10:7 NKJV). (see also Psalm 40:7.) When God revealed His plan of redemption for fallen man, God’s son was willing and ready to come and give Himself as a sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world. He is the Divine Yes. What about you? Are you always watching and ready to do God’s will? That brings true meaning and purpose to life.

Second, GOD IS ALWAYS WILLING THAT ALL MEN BE SAVED AND HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die" (John 11:25). The Divine YES says YES to all who repent and believe in him for eternal life.

Third, GOD IS ALWAYS READY TO ANSWER PRAYER. Call upon Him for mercy and forgiveness. He will abundantly pardon. (See Isaiah 55:6, 7.) The Divine Yes is always waiting for His children to call. "Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3). Jesus assures us, "IF you ask anything in my name, I will do it" (John 14:12-14).

Fourth, GOD IS ALWAYS READY TO FULFILL HIS PROMISES. "For all the promises of God in Him are yes, an in Him Amen, to the glory of God" (2 Corinthians 1:20). Know and claim His promises. God keeps His promises. "He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things" (Romans 8:32). The Divine Yes promises us we can be with Him in His Father's house. (See John 14.)

Fifth, GOD IS ALWAYS READY TO MOVE ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH. "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6).

George McDonald said, "Faith is the trying of the thing that you do not see and that you cannot be sure about. Step out for God. He has given you a new opportunity. It will start a fresh faith which you have not though of before."

Sixth, GOD IS READY TO GIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT as a deposit and guarantee of His full salvation and the fullness of God awaiting His children. (See 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.) The Divine Yes assures us that He gives the gift of the abiding, empowering Holy Spirit to all who ask in faith (Luke 11:13).

Jesus, the Divine Yes, says to you, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hears my voice, and opens unto me, I will come into Him, and sup with Him and he with me." (Revelation 3:20). Say YES to Him.
