Cure for the Evil Eye
|
People in some cultures live in terror of the “Evil Eye”. In 1946, magician Henri Gamache published the book Terrors of the Evil Eye Exposed. Gamache brought evil eye beliefs to the attention of American hoodoo practitioners. Those who believe in the “evil eye” curse have used a plethora of talismans, amulets, and cures for the “curse of the evil eye. The evil eye has long been a part of folklore in many cultures. It is believed that envy of the good fortune of people, whether in the form of material possessions or possessing beauty, health, or children, may result in their misfortune or elicit someone cursing them with the “evil eye”. |
Some hold that certain people can bestow a curse on victims by the malevolent gaze of their eye or put a jinx on them.
In the Jewish religion, some teach that the “evil eye” has to do with envy. It has been said that to “covet” (to eye enviously) in the 10th commandment refers to casting the “evil eye”. The Word of God reveals that one should not be concerned about the “evil eye” from others. But we should be concerned about our own “evil eye” of envy. It is God we should fear. Examine your heart. Do you have an “evil eye” of envy, jealousy, covetousness, or unbelief in the goodness or holiness of God?
Wearing sunglasses, a mask, or some good luck charm, or amulet cannot protect you from the “evil eye”. The cure for the “evil eye” is found in the Word of God.
What is envy? Cruden’s Concordance defines it as, “discontent at the excellence or good fortune of another and frequently in the Bible with the distinct idea of malice or spite”. Some translations change envy to jealousy. But though similar, I believe they are different. Perhaps we could say that envy has to do with material, monetary things. Jealousy has to do with people.
“A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.” That’s the curse of the “evil eye”.
“Love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame” (Song of Solomon 8:6 KJV).
Jesus gave us the cure for the “evil eye”. “Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will be also.”
“Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be! No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money” (Matthew 6:20-24 NLT).
Jesus gives us the cure for the “Evil eye”.
First – LAY UP YOUR TREASURES IN HEAVEN. (Matthew 6:220-21) Only in heaven can your treasures be safe and secure. When you invest in God’s kingdom and work you are laying up eternal treasures and rewards. Jesus said that where your treasures are, your heart, thoughts, and passions will be also. Earthly things do not last or satisfy. That’s why Paul said, “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (I Timothy 6:3-12).
Second – LIVE IN THE LIGHT. (Matthew 6:22-23) Light dispels darkness. Jesus is the light. (John 1:1-8) Come into the light of Christ. When you receive him and confess him as Savior and Lord, his light will fill you. His light and love will be a shield about you. (Psalm 3:3; 119:114) Live in the Light and no curse or “evil eye” can harm you. (I John 1:5-7) An “evil/double eye” is full of darkness but a single/pure eye is full of light.
Third – LOVE THE LORD GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART. (Matthew 6:24) Who is your master? Whoever or whatever you love the most will be your master. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other . . . You cannot serve both God and money.” Some people’s master is material things, “bling”; some are mastered by alcohol, drugs, and the pleasures and entertainment of this world. Some put others above God. We are commanded to love God with all of our hearts. (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37) Only Jesus can truly satisfy.
Don’t be mastered by the “evil eye”. Repent and make Jesus your Lord and Master. Walk in His light.
“For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved” (Romans 10:9-10 NLT).
