Bewitched
|
The splendor and splash of autumn leaves and the golden hue of harvest signal that the fall season is upon us. For some people, fall is a time for Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns, ghost, goblins, and witches. Several years ago a popular television series “Bewitched” portrayed a fun loving, harmless witch named Samantha. But witchcraft is not fun and games nor is it harmless. Satan’s aim is sinister and deadly. (John 10:10) It is interesting that Paul uses the word “bewitched” when writing to the Galatian Christians. “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?” (Galatians 3:1) |
Paul was telling the church that they were under a witchcraft curse! No curse can be released against obedient believers. But rebellion or disobedience places a person under witchcraft. The bewitchment of the church in Galatia involved disobeying God’s Word. Why? Because “rebellion is as witchcraft”. This church knew the truth clearly but disobeyed anyway.
In his book Undercover John Bevere says that a universal premise, “Whenever we disobey what God has clearly revealed to us, we bring ourselves under the influence of a witchcraft curse.” Bevere says that he has seen this happen in entire congregations, families, and individuals. “Many church goers for some reason or another live in an almost constant state of disobedience. One crisis follows another in their lives. Somewhere an access has been legally given to demonic oppression or influence. Their disobedience has made them vulnerable.”
Don’t be bewitched but blessed. God desires to bless not to curse. (Deuteronomy 23:4-5; Numbers 23:20) If you are disobedient to God, repent. Don’t be bewitched.
“The Lord’s servant must gently teach those who disagree. Then maybe God will let them change their minds so they can accept the truth and they may wake up and escape the trap of the devil, who catches them to do what he wants” (II Timothy 2:25-26 NCV).
I never did like “devil’s food cake”. Perhaps it’s the name of it or maybe it’s just too sweet. Satan can make things appear sweet but underneath it’s really devil’s food. One day Jesus was teaching his disciples about the need for Him to go to the cross and die for the sins of the world. Peter took Jesus aside and rebuked Him saying, “’Be it far from thee Lord: this shall not be unto thee.’ But He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense unto me: for thou savors not the things of God, but those that be of men’” (Matthew 16:22-23).
How could Peter confess that Jesus was the Son of God (Matthew 16:13-16) and soon after he rebuked Jesus? When one savors self and the wisdom of man rather than the things of God, they are bewitched. When we receive Christ Jesus as our Savior and Lord, Jesus is seated on the throne of our hearts. Our fleshly self is nailed to the cross, it is crucified. (Matthew 16:13-16) But when Jesus is on the cross instead of seated on the throne of our hearts as Lord, we savor the things of man instead of God. We are bewitched.
Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent. When they disobeyed God, sin came upon the entire human race. (Romans 3:23) Don’t be bewitched. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth that he shall also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7-8).
Don’t be bewitched. Sow to the Spirit and reap life everlasting. Put Jesus on the throne of your heart and life.
“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9).
