Beauty for Ashes
| Many cultures have differing versions of the myth of the Phoenix Bird. The Phoenix stood as a symbol of immortality, resurrection, and life after death. The Phoenix was said to be of breathtaking beauty and its feathers were composed of fire. It was also said to have lived from 500 – 1,461 years. Interestingly Hesiod said that the Phoenix lived 952 generations of 33 years each. When it neared death it built a pyre of myrrh and other spices and set its own fire and is burned by the fire. The new Phoenix arises from the ashes. Some legends tell of the Phoenix rising from the ashes after three days. |
Why do many cultures have legends similar to the Phoenix? I believe it is because God “has put eternity in their hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Mankind has an inbred longing for immortality.
Isaiah prophesied of the coming Messiah who would bring redemption and immortality to light. (Isaiah 61; II Timothy 1:9-10) Jesus Christ walked this earth for 33 years. When he began his ministry he went into the temple and the scroll of Isaiah was given to him. He turned to Isaiah 61 and read, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord; . . . To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified” (Isaiah 61:1-4 NKJV). (Luke 4:18-21)
Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy with more than mere words. He healed the blind, the lame, the lepers, raised the dead, set captives free, and preached the good news to the poor. He died on the cross at the age of 33 for the sins of the world and arose on the third day victorious over death, hell, and the grave.
The Phoenix Bird is a legend of man’s longing for immortality. Jesus is God’s plan of redemption to bring eternal life to all who will believe and receive him. If your hopes have turned to ashes, come to Jesus and he will give you “beauty for ashes.” Are you mourning a terrible loss? Come to Jesus and he will give you “the oil of joy for mourning.” To you who are “weighed down with a spirit of heaviness,” come to Jesus and he will give you “a garment of praise.” (Isaiah 61) Why would God do that for you? Because He loves you and desires to call you “trees of righteousness, that He may be glorified.”
Yes, “beauty for ashes.” The Phoenix is a legend of longing. But Jesus is the real deal. Hear his invitation, “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon You and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
Jesus, whose very name means “salvation”, told the truth: He is the only way to heaven. (John 14) The mystery has been solved. He alone can forgive your sins and make you right with God. “Beauty for ashes.” “If we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin” (I John 1:7). Come to Him today. He’s only a prayer away.
