The Daily Shepherd is a Christian blog that focuses on Christian living articles intended to inspire readers with stories that demonstrate the power of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives.

The LORD said to him, "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD ? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say." Exodus 4:11-12

Lessons Learned From Conquering Cancer

This spring yellow daffodils pierce winters gloom and song birds arrive to sing their songs and build their nests. Relay for Life committees plan and execute their annual fundraising events to help those fighting cancer.

As one among eight million cancer survivors, I would like to share some lessons in conquering cancer.

First – LIFE IS SHORT – ETERNITY IS SURE. In Christ we can be more than a survivor. We can hang onto God’s promise, “Despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us” (Romans 8:37 NLT). The King James Version says, “We are more than conquerors.”

The Internet is a crazy place. It seems like all the negatives of the world are made popular and well organized on the Internet. However, trying to find quality Christian related sites can be fairly difficult to do. I built GodSurfer.com as a way to change all of this and to add a greater sense of connectivity among Christians online. I am a programmer who loves the internet but desired a place where I didn’t have to filter through all the garbage in order to find quality. My hope is that GODSurfer.com is also a place for new Christian sites, articles and blogs to obtain greater visibility.

Is the Story of Jonah fact or fiction?

Jonah was a powerful prophet of God. One day God commissioned him to preach to the great and wicked city of Nineveh. God saw their violence and perversion and was determined to send terrible judgment upon them.

God’s prophet despised and abhorred the heathen Ninevites. So much so that he booked passage on a ship that would take him as far away from them as possible. He knew if he told them what God had said they might repent and be spared. He wanted God to punish the ruthless Ninevites – not pardon them. So Jonah ran away.

Demonstrating the Mercy of Jesus Christ

In the Book of John 8:3-11, we read: “The scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do you say?’”

“This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. So they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.’”

Barium Springs Home for Children

Imagine a world in which the concept of “family” is turned on its head, a world in which you are forced to pack your few belongings and move to a new home with a new family. Most of the time you are not making the move with your brothers and sisters who are being placed in other foster homes. Or, imagine for a moment you are the new family taking in a child who is confused, rootless and likely angry. Very little imagination is required if you are one of the 518,000 children in foster care in the U.S. or one of the foster families who open their hearts and homes to children in desperate need of stability. The foster care “system” is only as good as the people who choose to be a part of it.

Prophecies of the Lamb

Christianity is unique because Christ is unique. No other religion’s god gave their life as a sacrifice for their people in fulfillment of prophecy. No other god died and arose from the dead as the Son of God did. Good Friday and Easter (Resurrection Sunday) are the most holy days of the Christian calendar. Just as the Day of Atonement and Passover are in the Jewish calendar.

The sufferings and passion of Christ were prophesied (foretold) centuries before Jesus Christ was born in fulfillment of scripture. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29). What a breath taking declaration.

The Story of Jeff - Testimonial

Jeff was an unlikely candidate for God to ever use. Jeff’s mother was a prostitute. In many cultures, including America, he would in all probability have been aborted or euthanized. But Jeff mattered to God. Jeff’s father brought him into his home. As Jeff grew older, his half-brothers scorned and rejected him. They drove him away. Jeff found refuge in the rugged hill country. He loved the mountains. Many who have been abused and rejected, as Jeff had been, become angry and bitter. Many suffer various emotional and psychological disorders. But Jeff became a mighty warrior for God. He had a heart for God. He proved, once again, that where darkness and devastation is great, the grace of God is greater still.

Weathering the Storm’s and Stresses of Life

It seems that the storms and stresses of life throughout the world have increased exponentially sense that dreadful day of 9/11. In fact Jesus said that in the end times, “men’s hearts would fail them for fear of those things that are coming upon the earth” (Luke 21:26). In Matthew 24 Jesus gave some future signs that would point to and precede His return to earth. He referred to this time as “the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8). He described it as being like a woman in labor pains. Could we be in “the beginning of sorrows” that will usher in the triumphant return of Jesus Christ to planet earth? How can we weather the onslaught of the storms and stresses of life that seems to be increasing in intensity and in number throughout the world?

Words of Wisdom

Do you want to succeed and prosper in whatever you do? Only a fool doesn’t want to succeed in life. The Word of God provides us with the wisdom we need to succeed and be a winner. Jesus said when he was tempted by the devil, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). As you study and apply the inspired Word of God to your life you can be assured of success God’s way. (Joshua 1; II Timothy 2:15, 3:16)

The book of Proverbs is called the book of Wisdom. If you want to succeed and prosper, read, study, and apply God’s words of wisdom. “Whoever walks with the wise will become wise; whoever walks with fools will suffer harm” (Proverbs 13:20 NLT).

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

A bridge can be a lifeline. Battles have been fought over bridges. Those who have control or access to a bridge can move to safety or bring across needed forces for victory. History, books, and movies have commemorated strategic bridges. Some bridges, like the covered bridge, have been romanticized, immortalized, and enrolled as historic landmarks.

A world relief organization built a bridge over a high and dangerous gorge. For years the village women and children would have to walk four hours to obtain water and carry

President Lincoln’s Bible

When asked who in the history of the United States the greatest president was, most would say George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. There have been a lot of good presidents but perhaps fewer great presidents. Greatness is usually determined by how one handles great adversity. Certainly both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln persevered under extreme adversity and guided our nation through a dangerous juncture to make it what it is today.

Both Washington and Lincoln believed in the power of prayer. Both prayed for wisdom and strength to lead the nation.

A Dummies Guide to Prayer - Part 3

Perhaps you are not as technologically challenged as I am and wouldn’t need “The Dummies Guide to Computers”. But I need all the help I can get in the realm of personal computers. Likewise, many people feel inadequate in approaching God in prayer. Jesus gave his disciples a “Dummies Guide to Prayer” called “The Lord’s Prayer”. (Matthew 6:5-15) I hope you will be inspired and enabled to pray effectively to the God who loves you.

The best way to learn how to pray effectively is to simply DO IT! I would listen to people’s advice on using my computer and read all about it, but I was overloaded. I didn’t get anywhere until I got by myself and just did it. I learned from others but the

A Dummies Guide to Prayer - Part 2

As stated in last week’s article, I am technologically and electronically challenged. Maybe I should have lived in the days of the Pony Express and the circuit riding preachers. Although it would be a sacrifice to do without my indoor shower, I still struggle with computers and the information age in which I live. “A Dummies Guide to PC’s” has helped me, somewhat.

As great as the advancements that have been made in technology and the sciences, most people have yet learned to experience the power of prayer. But even the disciples of Jesus felt inadequate to pray as Jesus did to his Heavenly Father.

A Dummies Guide to Prayer

A Dummies Guide to PC’s and other such genre was probably written with me in mind. I must admit that I am technologically and electronically challenged. It took me years to get enough courage even to turn the computer on. I’ve learned to log on and send my e-mail but I still enjoy and prefer the “old-fashioned” methods of communication. I guess I needed A Dummies Guide to PC’s.

There is a powerful way of communicating with the God of the universe that few people have tapped into. It is called Prayer. Many people believe in prayer, but don’t know how to pray or feel inadequate to pray effectively. The disciples of Jesus spent three and a half years with him.
